CASE STUDY 001 / CHAPTER 04

Brand consistency

Conflicting tenure claims, homepage copy, and credibility: the Spider Juice Technologies case study examines consistency across the website and business profile.

04Consistency & the Homepage

Five ages for one company.

Longevity is the site's main selling point, stated in the meta description, the homepage opener and the Google profile. It is stated differently almost every time.

Excluded for fairness: the homepage also says "Thirty Seven years ago" — but that refers to when the founder coined a real-estate concept, not the agency's age.

The homepage, above the fold

  • The H1 promises the SEO Cure that the Big Boys Like to Keep Secret — infomercial framing on the page's single most important heading.
  • The first paragraph contains a sentence that doesn't parse: National sites have also cured their couldn't reach a million views.
  • Its call to action is Call for your solution in order to fix your limpy digital results. "Limpy" is not a standard word, and its nearest reading invites the wrong association.
  • Six typos in the service blurbs alone: Whiich, just on of these things, Do you run and ad?, compliments geotargeting, loves who it loves loves, digital ailements.
  • A reversed claim: Gap analysis can lead to missed ranking opportunities — gap analysis finds missed opportunities; it doesn't cause them.
  • The "latest posts" feed leads with Lady Gaga at the 2011 Grammys, Brexit, and the 2012 election. The sitewide "Recent Posts" widget adds a 2011 Charlie Sheen story.
The cost

A homepage typo in a plumber's site is a small blemish. In an agency's, it is a demonstration of the product: the buyer is being asked to trust this firm to write and optimize their pages. Every defect above sits in the first screen or two a prospect reads.
